What is ember guard?

Ember guards have a hole size of less than 2mm and cover gutters, roof valleys and roof space openings to prevent embers from igniting leaves and debris. The ember guard gutter mesh fixes to the front lip of the gutter and the roof: metal or tiled roofs. The ember guard ski slope angle encourages leaves and debris to fall naturally to the ground.

Difference between gutter guard and ember guard

The primary difference between an ember guard and a gutter guard (leaf guard) is the hole size. Many gutter guards are fire-resistant and non-combustible, but a gutter guard with a hole size of less than 2mm meets the ember guard compliance in bushfire-prone areas. An ember guard gutter mesh must be aluminium unless in a bushfire-prone area with a BAL rating of BAL-40 or BAL-FZ. A steel mesh or bronze mesh is required in the BAL-40 to BAL-FZ ratings.

How do Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL ratings) affect my ember guard choices?

Australian standards dictate ember guard requirements for specific bushfire-prone areas across Australia. The Australian standards guide building code and ember guard compliant products and installation. These ratings for each bushfire-prone area include the following:

• BAL LOW indicates low risk from ember attack, heat, or flames and does not specify ember guard or gutter guard products that best suit gutter protection needs.
• BAL-12.5 indicates risk from ember attack, debris or radiant heat up to 12.5KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-12.5 Australian standards.
• BAL-19 indicates a significant risk of ember attack, burning debris or radiant heat up to 19KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-19 Australian standards.
• BAL-29 indicates a high risk of ember attack, burning debris or radiant heat up to 29KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-29 bushfire attack level.
• BAL-40 indicates an extreme risk of ember attack, burning embers or radiant heat up to 40KW/m2. BAL-40 ratings require a steel gutter mesh and bronze ember guards.
• BAL-FZ (BAL Flame Zone) indicates a severe risk of ember attack, flammable debris or radiant heat with an excess of 40KW/m2. BAL- ratings require steel gutter mesh and bronze ember guards.
