What is ember guard?
Ember guards have a hole size of less than 2mm and cover gutters, roof valleys and roof space openings to prevent embers from igniting leaves and debris. The ember guard gutter mesh fixes to the front lip of the gutter and the roof: metal or tiled roofs. The ember guard ski slope angle encourages leaves and debris to fall naturally to the ground.
A gutter guard mesh system protects your home from leaves, dirt, and debris ignited by windborne embers, especially in fire-prone areas. Not only do ember guards prevent ember attacks, but they are also effective at keeping out small debris that clogs your gutters – such as pine needles, dirt, etc. Our Ember Mesh kits are high-quality ember guard mesh that complies with the Australian standard for bushfire attack levels.
Secure a complete fireproof solution with solar mesh for solar panels. While an ember guard is unsuitable for solar panels, solar mesh protects your panels from birds, possums and debris, which are fire hazards.
We offer the best ember mesh and the widest selection of colours, sizes, and thicknesses. You can choose from 21+ Colorbond® colours to ensure the product matches your roof, so no one will even notice it’s protecting them!
Difference between gutter guard and ember guard
The primary difference between an ember guard and a gutter guard (leaf guard) is the hole size. Many gutter guards are fire-resistant and non-combustible, but a gutter guard with a hole size of less than 2mm meets the ember guard compliance in bushfire-prone areas. An ember guard gutter mesh must be aluminium unless in a bushfire-prone area with a BAL rating of BAL-40 or BAL-FZ. A steel mesh or bronze mesh is required in the BAL-40 to BAL-FZ ratings.
Why is ember guard so important in bushfire-prone areas?
Around 80% of all homes destroyed in Australian bushfires are due to stray burning embers igniting debris in gutters, valleys, and roof spaces which can ignite roof insulation and other property structures.
Bushfire protection is a serious concern for most homeowners. A proper ember mesh that covers cavities and spaces in your home can provide protection.
Not only do ember guards prevent ember attacks, but they are also effective at keeping out small debris that clogs your gutters – such as pine needles, dirt and etc. Our Ember Mesh kits are high-quality ember guard mesh that complies with the Australian standard for bushfire attack levels.
What are ember guard requirements?
Ember guards, unlike gutter guards, must have an aperture size of 2mm or less. The gutter guards must be a non-combustible mesh to meet the ember guard compliance in bushfire-prone areas. An ember guard gutter mesh must be aluminium unless in a bushfire-prone area with a BAL rating of BAL-40 or BAL-FZ. A steel mesh or bronze mesh is required in the BAL-40 to BAL-FZ ratings.
Is your ember guard compliant mesh?
Yes. Our ember guards comply with the Australian standard, meeting the low bushfire attack level low-BAL-29. Ember mesh has a hole size of less than 2mm to prevent burning embers from igniting leaves and debris in the gutters.
We offer the best ember mesh and the widest selection of colours, sizes, and thicknesses. You can choose from 21+ Colorbond® colours to ensure the product matches your roof, so no one will even notice it’s protecting them!
How do Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL ratings) affect my ember guard choices?
Australian standards dictate ember guard requirements for specific bushfire-prone areas across Australia. The Australian standards guide building code and ember guard compliant products and installation. These ratings for each bushfire-prone area include the following:
- BAL LOW indicates low risk from ember attack, heat, or flames and does not specify ember guard or gutter guard products that best suit gutter protection needs.
- BAL-12.5 indicates risk from ember attack, debris or radiant heat up to 12.5KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-12.5 Australian standards.
- BAL-19 indicates a significant risk of ember attack, burning debris or radiant heat up to 19KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-19 Australian standards.
- BAL-29 indicates a high risk of ember attack, burning debris or radiant heat up to 29KW/m2. Our aluminium ember guard mesh is non-combustible and compliant with BAL-29 bushfire attack level.
- BAL-40 indicates an extreme risk of ember attack, burning embers or radiant heat up to 40KW/m2. BAL-40 ratings require a steel gutter mesh and bronze ember guards.
- BAL-FZ (BAL Flame Zone) indicates a severe risk of ember attack, flammable debris or radiant heat with an excess of 40KW/m2. BAL- ratings require steel gutter mesh and bronze ember guards.
If you require a fire ember guard or steel mesh for BAL-40 or BAL-FZ levels, please ask whether we can provide you with a custom gutter guard product.

How do we ensure our ember guard is quality mesh?
Our woven aluminium bushfire mesh features a tiny 1.9mm hole aperture and is at least 0.5mm thick – making it the strongest currently available.
It’s also double-rolled at the edges to prevent fraying and increase strength with an Interpon D1000 powder-coating. We trust our gutter guard products, and our ember mesh has an astounding 20-year warranty on the mesh!
When protecting your home, nothing lowers the risk of a structure with as minimal cost and effort as installing bushfire mesh on your roof.

What are other ember guard applications?
Ember guards are also suitable for gutter protection from fine leaf debris. Ember guards perform the role of gutter guard to keep the gutter clear of fine-leaf trees, such as pine trees, she-oaks, jacarandas and wattles. Our smaller aperture size ensures that your gutters stay clear.
